TBM CUTTERS MADE BY LUOYANG JIU JIU AFTER ITS LONG TERM STUDY
The cutting tools for tunnel boring machines have been researched, fabricated and tested from early 1960s as well as the tunnel boring machines have been researched, designed and fabricated in China.The research units for TBM have obtained a little progress on the cutting tools,only made out some scrapers to deal with the soft formations because the research units have had insufficient money to invest in the cutting tool study and there was no special manufacturer in China at that time.
The Railway Ministry had agreed that the Qinling Railway Tunnel in the Xi-Kang Line could be dug through by TBM method after a large-scale demonstration in the middle of 1990s. The cutter disks were largely needed due to a great consumption in the job, but the new cutters couldn’t meet the program requirement because of the delivery time for the supply and high cost of imported cutters. Researching and fabricating Chinese TBM cutter disks were imperative. The Ministry organized a task force that consisted of the experts and engineers from the Tunnel Engineering Bureau, Luoyang Jiu Jiu Company and Changsha Railway Institute, starting to research the TBM cutters and fabricate Chinese TBM cutter disks jointly from the late of 1990s. The task force has researched WIRTH TBM and cutters used at Qinling Railway Tunnel and tried to make the cutters localized from then.
In 1997, the task force researched and obtained a relative data from the RIOBBINS TBM cutters used at the water tunnel project in Shanxi Province. The task force started to design and fabricate the cutters by the data.
By tackling key problems and site testing, the TBM cutter disks made by Luoyang Jiu Jiu Co., reached the predicted target. The cutter disks, face cutters, center cutters made by Luoyang Jiu Jiu Co., were very successful in their services as being equipped on WIRTH TBMs used by the Tunnel Engineering Bureau and the Eighteenth Engineering Bureau of China Railway Engineering Corporation Group at the projects of Qinling Tunnel, Taohuapu Tunnel and Mogouling Tunnel. The item for TBM cutters localized has sucessfully passed the appraisal made by the Ministry of Railways. In 2004, the Tunnel Engineering Bureau and Luoyang Jiu Jiu Co., jointly applied for the project approval on “TBM Cutting Tool and Disk Design and Key Technology Research” in the “National High-Tech Research and Development Plan-the 863 Plan” and obtained the approval.
Luoyang Jiu Jiu Co. has been engaged in researching and fabricating the TBM cutting tools for nearly 10 years. It has made all the cutting tool components localized except for some bearings. The cutting tools localized could be equipped on Herrenknecht’s, Mitsubishi’s and Wirth’s TBMs. The features of the tools made by Luoyang Jiu Jiu Co., are acknowledged to be or reach the imported by the customers. More than 20 engineering companies have adapted Luoyang Jiu Jiu’s TBM cutting tools instead of imported ones in China at present.
